At Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi, Spider Plus, the UAE dealer for UNIC Cranes Europe, successfully executed a challenging project: lifting a massive 2.2-tonne curved glazing unit onto the first-floor walkway. This was part of an installation for a new Apple store, which also required the innovative task of hoisting another crane—the 8-tonne URW-706—onto the same level.
To tackle these unique challenges, Spider Plus deployed two UNIC mini spider cranes: the URW-1006 and the URW-706. The URW-1006, the largest crane in the UNIC range, played a pivotal role, boasting a 10-tonne lifting capacity. This versatile and compact machine was ideal for the heavy-duty tasks of lifting the oversized glass and repositioning the URW-706. Meanwhile, the URW-706, with its 6-tonne maximum capacity, was perfectly suited for installing the glazing unit in the confined and sensitive spaces of the mall.
The project began with the URW-1006 offloading the curved glazing unit from the delivery truck onto a specialized glass trolley. Its swift setup time and compact design—measuring just 2000mm in width—allowed it to navigate the mall’s walkways seamlessly. Fitted with durable tracks, the crane maneuvered effortlessly to the designated lift location, ready for the next phase.
After being reassembled on-site, the URW-706 was equipped with a below-the-hook curved glass vacuum lifter. This setup enabled Spider Plus to lift and precisely position the 2.2-tonne glazing unit. The crane’s compact dimensions and 8-tonne weight allowed it to safely operate on the upper floor without causing any damage to the mall’s delicate flooring or encountering spatial constraints.
The URW-1006 proved indispensable for transferring both the curved glass and the dismantled URW-706, along with a large vacuum lifter, to the first-floor walkway. With limited access points available, the URW-1006’s strength and versatility were critical for ensuring the successful execution of this intricate task.
Thanks to the expertise of the Spider Plus team and the advanced capabilities of the UNIC URW-1006 and URW-706 cranes, the curved glass installation was completed with precision and efficiency. Despite the logistical and structural challenges presented by the oversized glazing unit and the mall environment, the combination of skilled operators and innovative equipment ensured the project’s success.
